Celebrating 40 Years of Firmdale
‘‘I hope for every guest to feel a homecoming when they stay with us, but at the same time, to have their imagination ignited in some way, because I believe there’s something invigorating about that.’’ - Kit Kemp
It’s hard to believe that four decades have passed since Tim & Kit Kemp opened Dorset Square Hotel in Marylebone in 1985 – a year in which a young Boris Becker won his first Wimbledon championship and the first mobile phone call was made.
Their vision was clear: to create an experience for guests that was akin to staying in a comfortable and interestingly curated home with exceptional, personalised service and an unrivalled attention to detail.
Forty years on, this pioneering vision has seen Tim and Kit breathe life into 11 award-winning locations, including Covent Garden Hotel and Ham Yard Hotel in London, and Crosby Street Hotel and Warren Street Hotel in New York. Acknowledged as trailblazers in the industry, they were the forerunners of a new movement in hotels, championing art, craft and design at every turn and inspiring a whole generation of hoteliers and interior designers worldwide.
Regeneration is also at the heart of Tim and Kit’s ethos. From The Soho Hotel, which was built from scratch on the site of an old car park, to the development of Ham Yard, which transformed a forgotten corner of Piccadilly into a thriving urban village complete with shops, public art, each new property has shaped the neighbourhood in which it sits.
Each hotel brims with life, offering culinary experiences, interesting cultural conversations and spaces that capture the creative spirit of the local neighbourhood - a combination uniquely characteristic of Firmdale.
