THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE FOUNDATION
The Environmental Justice Foundation is a UK based, non-profit organisation working internationally to protect the environment and defend human rights. They believe that environmental security is a human right and for millions of people around the world, the result of a degraded environment is hunger, poverty and vulnerability. Firmdale’s involvement includes taking part in initiatives such as ‘Postcards from the Frontlines’, whereby individuals send e-postcards directly to Ban Ki Moon highlighting people who have lost their homes due to climate change, flood victims in particular; the ‘London Monopoly Challenge’, a ‘real life’ Monopoly game played through the streets of London and for which Firmdale will sponsor a team; and also through the ‘World Oceans Day’ restaurant initiative that involves donations made to the charity by offering restaurant guests a specially designed, ethically and sustainably sourced, seafood dish for a chosen month.
Build Africa is a UK based charity that undertakes and supports work in rural Uganda. Firmdale Hotels sponsored the construction of Kawo Kakira Primary School in Bukedea, Uganda. This sponsorship encompassed the building of a classroom; the supply of resources required for the children, including desks and books; the supply of teachers' furniture; the building of a latrine block; all construction co-ordination costs, including site visits, organisation of the school construction committee and the liaising with government officials.
