What's On - Live Music at Dorset Square Hotel

live music at The potting shed

  • The Potting Shed at Dorset Square Hotel
  • Classical guitarist, Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas
  • Every Thursday 7pm - 10pm

Every Thursday throughout the summer, The Potting Shed will be filled with the gentle sound of classical guitar, courtesy of award-winning Cuban musician, Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas. Join us for date night or dinner with friends and be transported to the colourful shores of Havana and beyond.

Ahmed’s music covers an array of traditions from the classic to the contemporary, but Cuban music has always played a central role in his life, thanks to his Cuban heritage.

“When I play, I want people to feel moved and soothed. I try to convey a story, to help people suspend their thoughts and connect in a way that written language or words can’t achieve. I want them to have a meaningful moment”. - Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas

About Ahmed Dickinson

Born in Havana, Ahmed graduated from the Superior Institute of Art (ISA Havana) before going onto study at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music. For almost a decade he worked closely with the late Cuban guitarist and composer Jose Antonio (Ñico) Roja, who is credited with the revival in Cuban popular song in the 1940s.

Ahmed has released six albums and has performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Union Chapel, and St James’s Piccadilly. In 2009, he won two prizes at the Cubadisco Awards: Best Instrumental Soloist & Best Instrumental Album for his debut recording paying homage to his mentor Jose Antonio Roja.
