- - I'm Kit Kemp, Design Director for Firmdale Hotels. Every room is like a painted canvas. It has to tell a story. Here we are in the Oscar Bar and Restaurant in the Charlotte Street Hotel. It's very colourful, as you can see. The inspiration for the restaurant and the bar is Bloomsbury because that's where we are. And the first thing you notice when you come into the restaurant is a mural, which actually is on three sides of the room. To find out more about Bloomsbury and the Omega Group, I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum and looked up as much as I could. I saw all the furniture, I saw the colours, but also saw the magazines at that time. And we found The Illustrated London News of June 1916 which had wonderful pictures of murals painted by members of the Bloomsbury set. They were scenes of contemporary London life, and we felt that this would be a great starting point for a mural. We found a fabulous muralist called Alexander Hollweg. Alexander knows a lot about Bloomsbury, and what's more, he knows the palette that they work in. There's a particular palette, particular colours that are extremely good. So, I knew we'd found the right person who could actually paint it. But, we didn't want 1916. We wanted the year 2000, which is the date when the restaurant was finished. And in fact, it's already becoming a timepiece itself because as you go around and look at the walls, there is a computer which already is looking extremely old and the size of a house. And there's the Dome. There's the London Eye. There's my husband playing chess. And there are references to Duncan Grant's work. He often painted tennis players in Fitzroy Square, and swimmers, but they're given a very modern emphasis. The lighting above the bar is workman's light, little bulbs with a cage around them, and it's above a pewter bar. Well a pewter bar is just one of the original French ideas, and it's beaten and cut to the shape of the size of the bar. And then, the bright orange, the glow. It's always nicer I think in a restaurant or bar to have warm colours around you rather than cold. It has to work all through the day. It has to work breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and supper. And what we've tried to do is to immediately envelop you into a feeling of London itself. I'm hoping that this mural will last longer than we do. It's very much an intrinsic part of the hotel, and it's never in fashion, so hopefully will never be out of fashion.
