Firmdale Hotels is committed to working with a specified number
of charities per year, one of which will always be within the local
community. Firmdale Hotels will offer support through the
skills of its employees and the company's own resources. The chosen
local charity will benefit from the direct involvement of Firmdale
Hotels employees who will undertake a day of charitable work. This
allows the employees to see the impact of their involvement.
For 2011 Firmdale Hotels is working with:
BUILD AFRICA, a UK based
charity that undertakes and supports work in rural Uganda.
Firmdale Hotels has sponsored the construction of Kawo Kakira
Primary School in Bukedea, Uganda. This sponsorship encompasses the
building of a classroom; the supply of resources required for the
children, including desks and books; the supply of teachers'
furniture; the building of a latrine block; all construction
co-ordination costs, including site visits, organisation of the
school construction committee and the liaising with government
officials. Firmdale Hotels are also helping to sponsor teacher
training, with emphasis on community involvement and ensuring the
sustainability of the school, as well as enabling the children to
learn through play and a national radio advertising campaign
encouraging parents to send girls to school. The project design and
management costs have also been met by Firmdale Hotels, along with
supporting costs in Build Africa's Ugandan and UK offices for the
monitoring, evaluation, financial tracking and reporting on all
aspects of the project. Fundraising initiatives for Build Africa as
a whole have included the Honolulu Marathon on the 12th December
2010, through which over £4,500 has been raised by members of
staff, and also the London Marathon. In February 2011, Firmdale
employees visited the school and assessed progress. Kawo Kakira
Primary School was commissioned on the 1st March and officially
handed over to the governing body, parents and pupils.
