NEW YORK NOW (MAY-JUNE)
MATILDA
Shubert Theatre, 225 West 44th Street, NY 10036 T:
212-239-6200
Following on from a spectacularly successful run in London's West
End, Tim Minchin's stage version of Matilda has become the hottest
Broadway musical of the year. Based on the much loved Roald Dahl
children's novel, the production tells the story of a remarkably
intelligent young girl persevering against cruel parents and a
sadistic headmistress. Bertie Carvel provides a master class in
comic timing as the villainous Miss Trunchball and the talented
young actresses tackling the title role infect the piece with
irresistible anarchic high spirits.
Through April 6th 2014
ORPHANS
Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 West 45th Street, NY 10036 T:
212-239-6200
This production sees Alec Baldwin returning to the New York stage
for the first time since 2006 as a mysterious gangster on the lam
who takes two semi-feral young men under his wing in the Broadway
revival of Lyle Kessler's psychological thriller. Under Daniel
Sullivan's sharply intuitive direction, Orphans is defined by its
bracing energy, dark humor and surprising tenderness. Also starring
Tom Sturridge and Ben Foster.
