New exhibitions are opening in New York all the time. This is
our choice of the best of the latest.
NEW YORK NOW (MAY-JUNE) PUNK: CHAOS TO
COUTURE
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue, NY 10028 T:
212-535-7710
This exhibition examines punk's impact on high fashion from the
movement's birth in the 1970s through its continuing influence
today. Original punk garments from the mid-1970s are juxtaposed
with recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture
and ready-to-wear have borrowed punk's visual symbols. The pièce de
résistance - accessory designer Charlotte Olympia has teamed up
with jeweler Tom Binns to create a collection exclusively for the
opening.
Through August 14th
RAIN ROOM
The Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd Street, NY 10019 T:
212-708-9400
The latest project from Random International is their largest and
most ambitious to date. The Rain Room is essentially a field of
falling water that pauses wherever a human body is detected,
offering visitors the experience of controlling the rain. The
installation is unique in that it encourages spectators to become
performers, yet at the same time provides the perfect environment
for solitary contemplation.
Through July 28th
